Arbor Acres Receives State Approval For Expansion

The North Carolina Division of Health and Human Services has approved a Certificate of Need (CON) requested by Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community that will add 18 skilled nursing beds to Fitzgerald, the community’s health care center, and four assisted living beds in Asbury Place, the assisted living facility.   Earlier this year Arbor Acres announced plans to renovate Fitzgerald and requested the additional beds from the state. This approval means, upon completion of the renovations in 2016, Arbor Acres will have 83 licensed skilled nursing beds and 106 beds to accommodate residents needing assisted living, including 30 rooms devoted exclusively to Memory Care.

“Transforming the skilled nursing facility into a state-of-the-art place of life-giving hope is Arbor Acres’ foremost goal at this time,” says David Piner, Arbor Acres’ President. “Our gratitude is extended to the state for willingness to allow us to grow in order to serve present demand and in anticipation of the increasing need for this level of care over the next 30 years.”

Fitzgerald is a 30 year old structure. The renovations are meant to ready the space and equip it for state-of-the-art care and provision of the highest possible quality of life for residents over the next 30 years.  The public areas of Fitzgerald will be reconfigured to create more open space and, according to Piner, “ to make them more accommodating to the residents and their families, giving them more to do, to see and with which to engage.”  The renovation calls for creation of large interior gardens and water features to provide beauty and a higher quality of life for residents and their families. “Fitzgerald is a place where people come to live. Our purpose is to support them in their engagement with life and to provide them and their families a setting within which they all can find as much joy and happiness as possible” said Piner.

After the renovation all resident rooms will have full private baths. The building will have new HVAC, electrical, plumbing and fire suppression systems to improve function and energy efficiency.

Under conditions laid out in the CON, Arbor Acres will begin renovation of Fitzgerald in 2015.  The project should take about 18 months to complete and will cost approximately $10 million.
